Abstract

What makes a star a Mira? The GCVS says a Mira is a red giant variable with a large visible amplitude and emission lines. But is it the beginning of pulsation that produces the Mira phenomenon, or something else? How do Miras differ from other red giant variables inside? G. Bowen has been calculating models for the outer parts (atmospheres and winds) of Mira stars. Comparing the pattern that is emerging from these models with observations of Miras gives a clue and the result is a bit of a surprise!
