Abstract

(Abstract only) Galaxies and gaseous nebulae are extended, low surface-brightness objects which make challenging and rewarding CCD imaging targets for professional and amateur astronomers alike. The basic techniques for obtaining high-quality images of extended objects with CCDs are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to proper instrumentation, the use fo filters, and ideas for imaging very extended objects.
