The goal of our research project is to use photometry to detect changes in brightness of the variable star Qatar-9. The photometry of Qatar-9 will be used to detect the transit of Qatar-9 b, an exoplanet orbiting Qatar-9. We are interested in the photometry of Qatar-9 so we can calculate the orbital parameters of Qatar-9 b based on the collected data. We would like to have multiple transits observed to collect data for the orbital parameters. We would also like to use a blue and red filter to view the star.

The right ascension of Qatar-9 is 10h 42m 59.5933s and the declination is +60d 57m 51.15946s. The magnitude of Qatar 9 is 14.02 and the depth of magnitude 0.0310. We got this information from two separate databases, http://var2.astro.cz/ and https://www.aavso.org/. We have the dates and times of the transits listed below:

You need to provide future dates since it is already early October. They should be specifically selected assuming the TMO61 scope will be used. This FSM is needed to achieve sufficient flux in B and R. Unfortunately, it has not been running reliably so you should not expect images in a timely fashion.

Sorry about that; I asked my students to send in an observing schedule for the next three months and they included all the upcoming transits instead. Anyway, here are the transit windows (with about 30 minutes before ingress and after egress) that will be local night for TMO61 (all times are UT).

October 19 - 8:55 - 11:30 UT
October 22 - 10:55 - 13:35 UT
November 5 - 7:35 - 10:25 UT
November 8 - 9:45 - 12:20 UT
November 25 - 10:25 - 1:10 UT
November 28 - 10:15 - 1:005 UT
December 12 - 7:05 - 9:55 UT
December 15 - 9:05 UT - 11:55 UT

If we can get one or two good sets of data that will be sufficient; so there is no need to do all the observations if good data comes through early.

Please have students re-run all possible dates looking for nighttime in NH. With possible altitudes indicated. Some from the first list had poor altitudes. In most recent list, Nov 25 and 28 had incorrect UT for end? Typo?

Plan created and committed to NH. You will get a few test images first. Check exposure and advise soonest.

Each subsequent transit run is 3 hours long. Currently C filter, 60s for 180 images. Once you get 1 or 2 good runs, please advise and I will cancel the rest! Cross fingers on weather!

You should have the test images in your VPhot account now. Note that they are not flat calibrated due to a temporary issue. Full transits will be calibrated.

Check the exposure. Is it reasonable in the C filter? It should be too faint in the V filter. Advise.

Glad I got shared copies too. C filter is very out of focus. Will change focus offset and re-run. As you can gather, we don't use a C filter often! :-(

Managed to detect in V filter (SNR~22).

Qatar 9 about 14.1 mag in V as expected.

Looks good enough! I had my students do some plate solving and they were able to find it in V reasonably easily. Also, just judging from the out of focus V it looks like the telescope is slightly out of collimation; shouldn't make a big issue though right?

Do you think that this target at RA~11 hrs CAN be imaged for a long period of time (3 hours)?? A test image only requires a few minutes. Is it too close to the sun?? I asked previously about the low altitude on the selected nights??

I've checked the altitude and removed anything below 30 degrees (I think there might be one or two that start at 28 degrees) so it should be okay.
